The Ghost

A short story about a man’s descent into immorality and dishonesty, and the innocent victim caught in the web of his deceit.

Desiring a daughter, Pandit Sitanath Chaubey and his wife Mangala decide to (unofficially) adopt Mangala’s four-year-old half-sister Binni, a decision which brings much joy into their lives.

Years pass, and Binni grows up into a lovely young woman, prompting Chaubey to look out for a suitable husband. Days before the wedding however, tragedy strikes, and Chaubey is left a grieving widower.

On her deathbed, Mangala extracts a promise from Chaubey to always treat Binni as his daughter. But when he breaks his promise, he gets a visit from Mangala’s angry ghost.

But is Chaubey being haunted by Mangala or by his own conscience?

A short story about a man’s descent into immorality and dishonesty, and the innocent victim caught in the web of his deceit.

An English language translation of Bhoot by Munshi Premchand, the celebrated author of Indian classics such as Gaban, Godaan, and Nirmala.
